May 3 - First Friday Opening: Scott Yurko, A Painter’s Snapshots - Artist Scott Yurko and BCAC present A Painter’s Snapshots, a series of “confrontational portraits”: instead of just examining paintings, visitors to this exhibition will find the paintings looking directly at them. For Yurko, this is a way to create an emotional dialog between the art and the viewer. Hopefully, as one confronts each individual piece the viewer will get a sense of who the subject is as well as the specific emotional state they may emote.
May 3 - First Friday Binghamton - Presented by Gorgeous Washington Street Association, the First Friday Art Walk is our signature event highlighting the area's growing arts community.First Friday patrons enjoy gallery hopping, art openings, music and theater shows, fine dining, cafes, entertainment and merchant's special events. Held on the first Friday of each month from 6-9 PM, the First Friday Art Walk features rotating venues ranging from 30-40 locations downtown and throughout the city's neighborhoods.
May 4 - I Love My Park Day - I Love My Park Day, held the first Saturday in May, attracts thousands of volunteers from across the state to participate in cleanup, improvement, and beautification events at New York State parks and historic sites. Join us to celebrate New York's park system by cleaning up park lands and beaches, planting trees and gardens, restoring trail and wildlife habitat, removing invasive species, and working on various site improvement projects.
May 5 - Bridge Run Half-Marathon & 5KThe Greater Binghamton Bridge Run is a half-marathon and 5K that showcases four of the area's historic bridges.
May 6 - Jazz Session at the Firehouse Stage - Jazz Sessions at the Firehouse Stage occur on select Monday evenings from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Each 2-hour Session will have a featured musician and/or vocalist and be recorded for an eventual compilation CD. All Jazz Sessions are hosted by Mike Carbone. May 7 The Screenwriting Biz Film Series - From the Studio System to writing on spec, this film series will show the art and business of screenwriting. It shows the struggles that screenwriters face trying to write; dealing with writer’s block, screenplay readers, directors, producers, agents, and others while keeping their sanity and solvency. Most people take screenwriting for granted. These films will show just how hard it is to be a working screenwriter and how great the rewards can be.
May 8 - Social Justice Film Series at The Bundy: Ban the 24-Hour Workday - The Social Justice and Labor Film Series Presents: Ban the 24-Hour Workday This short film follows the struggles and victories of the home care workers leading the Ain't I A Woman?! Campaign. These working-class women of color in New York State are being forced to work 24-hour shifts, and are only paid for 13 of the 24 hours. May 17 - Margarita Masquerade Run - The Margarita Masquerade Run take place on Friday, May 17, 6:00pm at Endwell Greens. This event is presented by the Vestal Coal House and Endwell Greens. The 5K course will be take you through the golf greens – a unique new running course. Runners are encouraged to dress up in masquerade, there will be a post-race masquerade dance party.
